NCS Viewpoints: Should we judge other people, both historic and contemporary, and if so, by what standards?

We are reviving Viewpoints, the Norfolk Cambridge Society’s (NCS) philosophical discussion group. Having run successfully for several years, the group is open to all members who wish to engage in philosophical discussion or intellectual discourse among like-minded people. We hope that you can join us for the first comeback event and reignite the philosophical community at NCS.

Please note that we are limiting participant numbers to 10 people in each session. We’re hopeful that this allows for more fruitful discussion wherein all participants will have sufficient time to speak. We will, therefore, be opening spaces on a first come, first served basis.

Topic

During this discussion, we will examine how we perceive and ‘judge’ the actions of others and the moral lens that we should use when perceiving the contributions that contemporary and historical characters have made to society.

To introduce us to the topic, we ask that those attending familiarise themselves with this article on ‘Should we judge people of past eras for moral failings?’. We can reference this and others of your choosing during the scene-setting introductions and the ensuing discussions.

Format

We will begin with initial introductions of those present, where everyone can give some background on themselves and their thoughts on the topic. This will then be followed by a facilitated discussion, where we will have a chance to surface ideas from all sides of the debate on the central topic. We will close the discussion with a summary of key points.
